UK used-car buying checklist
Use this checklist before travelling, during the viewing and before handing over money. No single check—including a valid MOT—proves that a vehicle is safe, debt-free and accurately described.
Free checks
Before the viewing
- Review the full MOT history and expiry date.
- Check recorded mileage for decreases or unusual gaps.
- Look for recurring brakes, tyres, suspension, corrosion or emissions issues.
- Check current tax or SORN status.
- Check manufacturer safety recalls.
- Check Clean Air Zone or ULEZ requirements for your use.
- Compare the advert details with the official vehicle identity.
Licensed checks
Before committing money
- Confirm outstanding-finance status.
- Confirm police stolen status.
- Check insurance write-off history and Cat S/Cat N status.
- Review keeper-history information where supplied.
- Use a current market valuation as a negotiation reference.

At the viewing
- See the original V5C and match the registration and VIN.
- Verify the seller's name, address and right to sell.
- Inspect the vehicle in daylight and when the engine is cold.
- Check dashboard warning lights before and after starting.
- Inspect tyres, panel gaps, glass, lights and visible corrosion.
- Check for leaks, unusual noises, smoke and poor starting.
- Review service records, repair invoices and both keys.
- Arrange an independent inspection for a significant purchase.
Test drive
- Confirm that you are legally insured to drive the vehicle.
- Check steering alignment and braking stability.
- Listen for suspension knocks, wheel-bearing noise and drivetrain vibration.
- Test clutch, gearbox, parking brake and reverse gear.
- Check heating, air conditioning, windows, locks and infotainment.
- Recheck warning lights after the drive.
Payment and handover
- Do not pay until the vehicle identity, seller and provenance results are satisfactory.
- Agree in writing what is included and whether any faults or repairs remain.
- Use a traceable payment method and obtain a signed receipt.
- Complete the keeper-change process through the official DVLA route.
- Arrange insurance before driving away.
- Receive all keys, manuals, locking-wheel-nut key, service evidence and agreed accessories.
